On February 6, 2023 a series of devastating earthquakes shook the countries of Syria and Turkey. This was the strongest earthquake in the region in nearly a century. The earthquake destroyed more than 3,000 buildings across more than a dozen cities while taking more than 40,000 lives and leaving thousands injured while still searching for their loved ones.

World Central Kitchen’s Relief Team is beginning to set up operations in Turkey to support local authorities stretched thin due to the scale of the disaster. WCK is first to the frontlines, providing meals in response to humanitarian, climate, and community crises. When disaster strikes, WCK’s Relief Team mobilizes to the frontlines with the urgency of now to start cooking and provide meals to people in need. We know that good food provides not only nourishment, but also comfort and hope, especially in times of crisis.
The Turkish Philanthropy Funds 100% of donations to this fund will support TPF's Turkey Earthquake Relief Fund and recovery efforts. TPF monitors the impact on affected communities and work with partners at Afet Platformu to allocate funds to where they're needed most. Initially, the fund helps first responders meet survivors' immediate needs for food, fuel, clean water, medicine, and shelter. As needs emerge, TPF will support longer-term recovery efforts run by local, vetted partner organizations in the impacted area(s).
Direct Relief is preparing more than 25 pallets (approximately one semi-truck full) of medical supplies from its facilities in the US and Europe for Turkey and Syria. These pallets include items like medication and supplies to treat people with injuries and pre-existing medical conditions, such as field medic packs, antibiotics and other essential medicines, as well as oral rehydration solutions and hygiene items for those displaced from their homes.
Americares relief workers are coordinating with four longtime partner organizations working in Turkey and Syria to offer assistance. Americares is planning to send urgently needed medicines and relief supplies, including wound care products and first aid items, to support health workers treating survivors. Americares is also preparing to provide emergency funding to local health partners working in the region to help restore health services in the hardest hit communities.
Save the Children teams are coordinating closely with local partners on the ground, including Turkish Red Crescent and Support to Life, to distribute tents, hygiene kits, clothing, heaters, blankets and other essential items. In addition, their Emergency Health Unit (EHU), which provides life-saving healthcare in emergencies, is deployed to Türkiye to conduct assessments.
UNICEF USA is stepping up humanitarian assistance to children and families affected, in coordination with partners, whilst assessing the impact of the earthquakes. UNICEF is focusing on affected children and families having access to safe drinking water and sanitation services – critical in preventing illness in the early days of a crisis. Another high priority is child protection, including working to identify separated and unaccompanied children and trying to reunite them with family. UNICEF is also working on providing children with psychosocial support as many children were likely traumatized by the earthquake, the strongest they’ve experienced.
