Playwrights Foundation (PF) supports and empowers playwrights artistic growth and careers while championing their voices on a national level. We imagine a future where playwrights are radically centered as visionary leaders who transform the world through storytelling. Founded in 1978 to support emerging Bay Area playwrights, PF is now recognized as one of the nations leading non-producing theater organizations on the West Coast. PF is one of the few organizations that focuses specifically on the playwrights artistic process. We provide writers with the tools, resources, professional relationships, and creative space needed to develop new work and sustain long-term careers. Our programs prioritize experimentation, innovation, and the development of culturally relevant stories that expand the American theater canon.
