The Environmental Defense Center (EDC) was founded as a response to the 1969 Santa Barbara Oil Spill to serve as a grassroots, public interest environmental law firm. EDC's mission is to defend nature and advance environmental justice on California's Central Coast through advocacy and legal action. From its very beginning, EDC has linked arms with local communities, Tribes, and other nonprofits to protect the environment and promote environmental justice on the Central Coast of California. For almost 50 years, EDC has shown up in service to its many partners, using our legal, policy, and scientific expertise to win lasting protections for clean air, clean water, wild spaces, and a healthy environment for all. EDC serves as the only environmental nonprofit law firm in Ventura, Santa Barbara, and San Luis Obispo Counties, providing free and low-cost legal services to more than 140 fellow nonprofit and community organizations. EDC is more than a traditional law firm. In addition to legal case work, EDC also conducts policy, advocacy, analysis, and communications work, leading coalitions to ensure nonprofit partners working in common cause have access to relevant information and shared innovative strategies. EDC builds on its long track record of success, which includes fighting against the fossil fuel industry, destructive development, and other threats to wildlife, open space, and human health. EDCs core program areas are: Climate and Energy, Ocean, Land and Water, and Environmental Justice.
