Sister of NEW Pre-Apprenticeship of South Florida (Sister Of NEW) Training Program
The need for the Sister of NEW Training Program is evident in the underrepresentation of women in the construction industry. Despite progress in promoting diversity and inclusion, women still make up only a small percentage of the construction workforce.
This lack of representation is not only a social issue but also an economic and practical one. The construction industry is facing a shortage of skilled labor, and by excluding women from the workforce, it is missing out on a valuable pool of talent.
Moreover, studies have shown that diversity in the workplace leads to increased innovation, productivity, and profitability. By actively recruiting and training more tradeswomen, unions, contractors, and developers can benefit from a more diverse workforce and tap into a broader range of skills and perspectives.
Sister of NEW Training Program is uniquely positioned to address this need. We understand the specific challenges and demands of the construction industry, and we have designed our program to equip women with the necessary skills and experience to excel in this field.
Our program goes beyond just providing occupational training in construction skills. We also focus on physical and mental training to ensure that our graduates are prepared for the physical demands and mental resilience required in a career in construction.
Additionally, we recognize that many women may face childcare responsibilities, which can be a barrier to participation in training programs. That's why we provide daycare resources for women in our program with children aged twelve and under, ensuring that they have the support they need to fully commit to their training.
To provide practical on-site experience, our program includes working on ten units of rental housing and commercial spaces as they become available. This allows our trainees to gain hands-on experience and demonstrate their skills in a real-world setting.
In conclusion, Sister of NEW Training Program is needed to address the underrepresentation of women in the construction industry and to help unions, contractors, and developers employ more tradeswomen. By equipping women with the necessary skills, experience, and support, we can create a more diverse and inclusive construction workforce that benefits both the industry and society as a whole.
Target Population:
The target population for our program is women living Florida, specifically those who are living in poverty, receiving welfare assistance, or female veterans. We aim to provide opportunities for women who are interested in entering the construction industry, which traditionally has been dominated by men. Our program will prioritize individuals with high barriers to employment, such as lack of education or job training, limited work experience, or other challenges that prevent them from accessing stable, well-paying jobs.
